Top 10 Supermarket Foods To Avoid

Friday, January 13th, 2012

It’s a new year, and you’ve resolved to lose weight and eat healthier. You head to the grocery store, and suddenly feel overwhelmed at what is out there.

No wonder. “The average supermarket contains more nutritional minefields than ever before,” says David Zinczenko, author of the Eat This, Not That! series. Resolving to eat better isn’t enough. You have to be vigilant about carefully reading nutritional labels on packages and taking into account serving sizes. Will you actually eat only the amount listed as a serving??

Luckily, the Eat This, Not That! authors have compiled a list of the top 10 supermarket foods to avoid. They evaluated calorie counts and other nutritional values such as fat, saturated fat, sodium and added sugar across specific categories so you don’t have to. The list is:

1. Worst Packaged Food – Marie Callender’s Cheesy Chicken Pot Pie (1,140 calories and 72 grams of fat). When the first 4 ingredients listed are chicken fat, oils, cream and cheese , you know you should stay very far away from this one.

2. Worst Frozen Entree – Hungry-Man Select Classic Fried Chicken (1,030 calories)

3. Worst Frozen Pizza – DiGiorno Traditional Crust Supreme Pizza (790 calories)

4. Worst Stir-Fry/Skillet – Stouffer’s Sautes For Two Steak Gorgonzola (730 calories)

5. Worst Breakfast – Jimmy Dean Breakfast Bowls Pancakes and Sausage Links (710 calories)

6. Worst Individual Snack – Hostess Chocolate Pudding Pie (520 calories)

7. Worst Kids’ Meal – Lunchables with juice, Nachos, Cheese Dip + Salsa (490 calories)

8. Worst Pie – Marie Callender’s Southern Pecan Pie  (450 calories)

9. Worst Frozen Treat – Mrs. Fields Ice Cream Cookie Sandwich (450 calories)

10. Worst Packaged Side – Pasta Roni Fettucine Alfredo (450 calories)

There you have it – 10 supermarket foods to avoid to help keep your weight loss efforts on track. For more information on what to avoid – and what not to – visit the Eat This, Not That website.

The Spin On Spinach

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Fitness celebrity Popeye was a big fan of spinach. Was he correct? Or was he full of it, especially considering the food sickness scares of recent years?

This personal trainer says “be like Popeye and eat your spinach”! But, clean it good first.

What’s so good about it?

How about vitamins A and C, folate, lutein, beta carotene, and fiber. It reduces your risk of heart disease, cancer and macular degeneration. Frozen spinach appears to retain the beta carotene longer than fresh, and cooking spinach makes the lutein more absorbable.

What to look for?

When fresh, spinach leaves can be crinkled or flat, and should be crisp and bright green. Avoid yellow, wet, or rotting leaves. You can also get it frozen or canned.

What to do with it?

Fresh spinach should be thoroughly cleaned by placing in a bowl of water and swishing around, then put in a colander to drain. Repeat this several times with fresh water until the water is clear afterward. Pat or spin dry.

To store fresh spinach, wrap it in a paper towel, place inside a plastic bag and put in the refrigerator.

Use like lettuce in salads or add to soups, stews, or pasta dishes. You can also cook it in a pan by covering and simmering for 2-4 minutes, until it wilts. No water needed. Or you can also steam or saute it in olive oil with garlic for 3-4 minutes.

Popeye was right, spinach is very good for you. Clean it carefully as described and it will be fine – as will you.

The Top Ten Risky Foods

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Risky due to food-borne illness, that is, since many of these same foods are otherwise considered healthy. Ranked by the Center for Science in the Public Interest and based on data since 1990 for foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, the ten are:

  1. Leafy Greens
  2. Eggs
  3. Tuna
  4. Oysters
  5. Potatoes
  6. Cheese
  7. Ice Cream
  8. Tomatoes
  9. Sprouts
  10. Berries

For detailed information about these foods and their risks, go to the CSPI article, and download the report.

Does this mean you should avoid these foods altogether? No! However, be careful, follow handling procedures carefully, and be alert for any news about problems.
