Philosophy

We believe that fitness is important for quality of life, and that everyone should be fit enough to be healthy. We believe that fitness should be fun, functional, and fundamental to your lifestyle. But we also believe that you must determine the level of fitness that is right for you, if any, beyond the basics needed for good health. It is our passion to guide you in deciding on your level of fitness and to help you achieve and maintain that level.

History

Healthy Habits was founded in 1990 as a traveling trainer service. In 1993, we opened Memphis' first commercial personal fitness training studio in our current location at 732 Brookhaven Circle. In 2004, Healthy Habits merged with Elite Personal Fitness and gained a second location at Ridgeway Country Club. Healthy Habits is now a division of Michael Ross-Spang, Inc.

Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What can a personal trainer do for me?

  • Basically, a trainer can help you solve your exercise problems.A trainer helps you:

  • determine your fitness needs.

  • set goals for improvement.

  • design an exercise program and schedule to achieve those goals.

  • learn the proper techniques for doing the exercises.

  • make progress at a safe and effective rate.

  • adjust the program as needed.

  • stay motivated and accountable.

  • develop nutrition strategies to complement your exercise program.

2. How should I pick a personal trainer?

Besides the technical and education skills evidenced by a certification from one of the best organizations (see next question), you want to hire a trainer whose personality meshes with yours, but who can motivate you to achieve your goal. You should be friendly with your trainer, but not be friends. Maintaining a professional relationship is important to both client and trainer. Your trainer should focus on you and your goals and should like working with your personality type. The facility should be convenient, clean, comfortable and safe. Policies should be written and provided to you.

3. What does being certified as a personal trainer mean?

Fitness in general, and personal training in particular, is relatively new as a profession, so there are no degrees offered in personal training and there are no state licensing requirements as in physical therapy. So, professional organizations began offering certifications as a way of standardizing what trainers should do and what they should know. Unfortunately, not all certifications are equal. Some require payment but only a little knowledge, while others are extensive professional preparations and examinations. The public often does not know the difference. In our opinion, probably the most rigorous, best accepted and most prestigious certifications are offered by the:
  • American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM).

  • National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).
  • National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM).
  • American Council on Exercise (ACE).

4. How do I get started with a trainer?

At Healthy Habits, we like to discuss your goals, exercise history, and scheduling needs and our pricing and philosophy on the phone before you come in. Once we determine which trainer seems like the best fit for you, we set up a meeting and tour of our facility with that trainer. Then both you and the trainer have the information needed for a good decision about working together. Assuming you both feel that it’s a good fit, there is some paperwork to complete and then you are ready. Certain age or medical conditions may require you to get your physicians approval before starting an exercise program.

5. How does a typical training session go?

The 2 most typical sessions go like this:
                                                               A                           B

Warm Up and Cardio segment       20-30 minutes       05-10 minutes

Strength Training                           20-30 minutes       30-40 minutes

Core Work and Stretching             10-20 minutes       10- 20 minutes

6. How often should I schedule training sessions?

It depends on your goals, your ability to work outside of training appointments, your knowledge of exercise, your schedule, your budget, and other factors. We see people 4 times a week and 4 times a year. The 3 most common scenarios are;

  • 3x a week for people who do all or most of their exercise with us.

  • 2x a week for people who do cardio on their own and strength with us.

  • 3-6 sessions close together to get started and 1-2x a month after that for accountability, fine tuning, and upgrades.

7. My back (or some other body part) hurts pretty often – how can I exercise?

With some guidelines from your physician, a trainer can choose the exercises most likely to improve or at least avoid problems with your medical condition. The trainer will teach you to perform exercises correctly and ensure that you progress appropriately. In general, exercise is helpful with most medical conditions. In fact, this is one of the most common reasons for which people hire trainers – to exercise safely despite a medical condition.

8. How can I pay for my training?

We accept cash, checks and credit cards. You can pay full price at each session, or you can purchase in advance a discounted package of 6,12,25,50 or 75 sessions. The more sessions you prepay, the larger the discount you receive.
